How to Bulk Convert WebP to PNG for Shopify Product Images

A Shopify merchant I worked with had 800 product photos that loaded beautifully on their storefront — all served as WebP by Shopify's CDN. The problem started when they needed those same images for their wholesale catalog PDF, their Amazon FBA listings, and a trade show booth banner. Every single downstream system rejected WebP. The junior dev on the project started downloading and converting files one by one. After watching him do 30 files in 20 minutes, I showed him our bulk WebP to PNG converter. The remaining 770 files took about 15 minutes.

Why Shopify Uses WebP (and Why You Still Need PNG)

Shopify automatically converts uploaded images to WebP for faster page loads. Great for SEO, terrible for everything else. Print vendors, wholesale platforms, FBA label systems, and email marketing tools all expect PNG or JPEG. WebP has been around since 2010 and these platforms still do not support it. The Batch Workflow That Actually Works

  1. Export your product images from Shopify (Settings → Files, or use a CSV export app)
  2. Drop the entire folder — up to 50 files at a time — onto the bulk converter
  3. Download the batch. Every file keeps its original name with .png extension
  4. Repeat for the next batch of 50 until done

For the 800-SKU project, that was 16 batches. Each batch processed in under 30 seconds. The converter runs entirely in your browser — your product images never leave your computer. This matters when you are handling supplier-confidential product photography.
