WebP files are everywhere — but opening them outside a browser can be frustrating. Here's exactly how to open WebP images on every major platform, using built-in tools you already have.
Windows 11 includes native WebP support. Double-click any .webp file and it opens in the Photos app. If it doesn't, install "WebP Image Extension" from the Microsoft Store (free, one-click install).
WebP support is not built into Windows 10 by default. Install the WebP Image Extension from the Microsoft Store. Search the Store for "WebP Image Extension" by Microsoft, install it, and Windows Photos will open WebP files normally. If you can't access the Store, use method 3 below.
Drag and drop the .webp file into any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge). All browsers display WebP natively. Or better: convert it to PNG and never worry about WebP compatibility again.
Preview.app opens WebP files natively. Double-click the file or right-click → Open With → Preview.
Use a browser to open the file, or install a WebP Quick Look plugin. Alternatively, convert the WebP to PNG using our free online tool — it works in Safari without installing anything.
iOS 14 and later support WebP in the Photos app and Safari. If a WebP file won't open from your Photos library, try opening it in Safari first, then save to Photos. For batch conversion, use our mobile-friendly converter — it works as a PWA and can be installed to your home screen.
Android 4.0+ supports WebP in Google Photos and most gallery apps. If your gallery app doesn't display WebP thumbnails, install Google Photos (free) — it handles WebP perfectly. Our online converter also works great in Chrome on Android.
