Animated WebP is Google's modern replacement for the GIF format. It supports 24-bit color (vs GIF's 256 colors), full alpha transparency (vs GIF's 1-bit), and produces files 60-80% smaller than equivalent GIFs. All modern browsers support animated WebP — Chrome since version 32, Firefox 65+, Safari 14+.
